What a wonderful and full month we have had at the Homestead! Lots going on. We are blessed and are loving life. We recently purchased an incubator on Ebay for $60. We wanted to try hatching our own chicks in an incubator. Although we have a ton of fertilized eggs, we have some friends who raise Easter Egger Chickens. They gave us 18 eggs and we incubated them.
Below is the video of the entire process along with a close up of some chicks hatching. Only 16 of the eggs were fertilized and out of them only 3 survived. I'm not sure what happened, but there were actually a bunch of chicks starting to hatch, but only 3 survived. Most died trying to get out of the egg shell. From asking around and talking to some people who have hatched chicks, some have told me that if they get turned upside down when they are starting to hatch, it can cause an issue. I'm thinking that when the first couple hatched, they were walking around and moving the other eggs (see in video). I have a feeling that is what happened.
We learned a ton that we can use for next time. But overall, it was fun and our kiddo's loved it! Check out the videos below! Thanks for checking out our blog! -Steve
